We recruit for a lot of things at Hirewell. As the hiring market has slowed in some sectors, we’ve seen hiring for salespeople remain strong.

Why? When the economy slows, hiring salespeople is the first tool in the playbook to maintain revenue and/or grow.

Is that the right strategy? Hard to say. Anyone that is selling right now knows that it is hard to connect with clients. Some aren’t buying. Everyone is overwhelmed by the barrage of emails. Automation tools and drip campaigns fill everyone’s inboxes. Mine is full of amazing offers for the latest AI tools and/or services that all sound exactly the same (SEO leads and appointment-setting services?). My spam folder gets 250+ messages a day. And no one answers the phone right now, so 50+ cold calls a day is especially futile.

What’s the solution? Great question. Relationships matter. So does your messaging. You are at best, getting one shot. So you better capitalize.

James and Jeff just filmed a talent rant on this topic. They talk about how hard it is to connect with hiring managers. Check it out!

Breaking News: Sales is hard.

Everyone in tech or ‘office dork’ circles is having a rougher go of it right now. And the same goes for recruiters.

Yes, companies are still hiring. Unemployment is still low. And there are still more open jobs than unemployed people. Just not at the extreme levels of the past 2 years.

When urgency goes down, expectations go up. Hiring managers and HR types want to see more out of organizations they partner with.

Jeff Smith and James Hornick dug into the realities of how companies are buying recruiting services in the next The 10 Minute Talent Rant, Episode 68 “Why Hiring Managers Aren’t Responding To Your Pitch”
