We’re now over 5 months into 2024, so trends that we were seeing earlier in the year have a lot more data behind them.

Hiring has stabilized. Welcome news for all of us in recruiting after 6 consecutive quarters of declining numbers.

We use data whenever possible - whether it is ours, or from a reputable source. Government data isn’t always that helpful - but one report I do follow is JOLTs (Job Openings and Labor Turnover).

Here’s the trendline pulled June 6. My two takeaways - 1) that’s a big drop from 18ish months ago, and 2) we’re still higher than we were in 2019. You know, back when the world was normal.

What’s my point? Trust me, I’m getting there.

The hiring market has shifted. Technology consistently represented nearly half of our client base. We ran a report of our industry breakdown by client for the last twelve months. Things sure have changed.

Tech still leads the way.

But #2? Manufacturing and Industrial. And it is gaining (relatively) fast. Some of that is due to our Midwestern roots. Chicago and the surrounding region have long been where things get built.

But we are seeing even more demand in Texas and the SE. Strength in non-tech sectors are a big reason that unemployment is still at a historical low.

Our Go To Market recruiting practice was where industrial hiring first took off.  That group had historically done a ton of work with software/tech firms. But they pivoted with the market 18 months ago.

As with many things at Hirewell - we tend to do a better job of delivering on it than talking about it. Case in point - we launched this practice in 2020. We didn’t add it to our website or marketing material until 2022. And we called it Supply Chain recruiting until about 6 weeks ago.

It has grown 50% per year since it launched and we expect it to continue on that pace for several more years. We just need to talk about it more.

So let’s start! Check out this video with Liz, Shania, and Kara - our BD Leader for the practice.

The 10 Minute Talent Rant, Episode 90 "Gen Z’s 12% Unemployment, Explained"

It came as a shock to pretty much everyone that the unemployment rate among 20-29-year-old college grads is hovering at 12%. While the economy in total is under 4%.

The question is: Why? What caused such a disparity? And who is to blame?

The answer? There’s no one cause. You can point your finger in pretty much every direction and be right.

James Hornick and Jeff Smith will breakdown how it happened and what’s at stake long term in episode 90 of The 10 Minute Talent Rant, "Gen Z’s 12% Unemployment, Explained”
