Hello!

We’ve got some more career advice for all of the job seekers out there. Our recruiters cover two topics that can be difficult to navigate.

  1. Compensation - how to talk about it. What to say and who to say it to.
  2. Utilizing your network to find a new job.

It is commonly discussed that a lot of people find new jobs through their personal network. But how many? I decided to use ChatGPT to find out. Sorry for the lack of originality. Here’s what it told me.

The percentage of job seekers who find their next job through their network can vary depending on various factors, including the industry, level of experience, and individual circumstances. However, networking is widely recognized as an effective job search strategy. While there is no definitive statistic for all job seekers, several studies and surveys have provided some insights into the role of networking in finding employment.

One study conducted by LinkedIn, a professional networking platform, found that approximately 70% of people in 2016 were hired at a company where they had a connection. Another survey by Jobvite, a recruiting software company, revealed that in 2020, around 50% of job seekers secured their most recent job through personal connections.

It's important to note that these percentages are not set in stone and can vary based on individual circumstances and the specific job market. Nevertheless, networking remains a valuable approach for job seekers to tap into hidden job opportunities, gain referrals, and obtain valuable insights and advice from professionals in their field.

Learn much? Me neither. But depending on what you do, 50-70% of people find jobs through their network. So watch our video for a few useful tips.

Episode 673-1

#tbt to 2021 and Episode 28 “Reference Checks Are Stupid”

Sadly, our first rant on this topic didn’t change the world. Reference checks have come back in a big way.

Our title was a bit facetious that time. Reference checks are not inherently stupid. But they’re commonly misused by damn near everyone.

So we’re giving it another crack: What drives companies to use them? What true value can you get out of them? And where do they fall short?

Jeff Smith and James Hornick answered these questions with the commentary you’ve come to expect in The 10 Minute Talent Rant, Episode 67 "Inconvenient Truths About Reference Checks"
